The first meeting of the Steering Committee, which was established within the framework of Istanbul Seismic Risk Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project (ISMEP) to oversee project implementation and provide strategic guidance, was held on April 28, 2006 under the chairmanship of Deputy Governor Adem KARAHANOGLU.

     Representatives from Governorate of Istanbul, Istanbul Special Provincial Administration, Istanbul Project Coordination Unit (IPCU), Governorate’s Disaster Management Center, Turkish Treasury, Prime Ministry State Planning Organization, Prime Ministry Turkish Emergency Management General Directorate, Prime Ministry Project Implementation Unit, Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, Istanbul Internal Revenue Office, Istanbul Provincial Administration of Public Works and Settlement, Istanbul Provincial National Education Administration, Istanbul Provincial Health Administration, Istanbul Social Services Administration, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality have attended meeting. The Director of IPCU K. Gokhan Elgin made a presentation on the Project and explained its components in detail.

     Following the presentation, the problems faced during the implementation of the project and the steps to be taken have been discussed. The importance of building up a dialog among the institutions and cooperating on mutual aim was put forward.

     Furthermore, it was decided that the Steering Committee, which was established in order to realize ISMEP studies in a fast, effective, economic way and to establish a common policy for eliminating the problems that may arise during the implementation and to create cooperation among central and local governments, would meet regularly every two months and/or organize extraordinary meetings whenever it is deemed necessary.
